Friday Fun

Friday, February 26, 2010 By Unknown 0 Comments
I've been toying with the idea of purchasing a new ironing board cover (the one I have now has seen better days and is ready to retire) and discovered a fabulous etsy shop and blog, City Chic Country Mouse. They are a mother-daughter team who love to sew and create fun things, from ironing board covers to oven mitts to make household chores more fun. Check out their blog for fun ideas, adventures and beautiful fabric creations. Looks like they're getting ready to update their shop early next week with some fun goodies!

I loved the comments some of you left the other day about what to do (or what you are going to do! :)) with paper rounds! Thanks for the great inspiration! One idea I decided to explore was:

mustangkayla said...If you did a couple different sized rounds you could distress (rough up) the edges and layer them into flowers! You could use them for a funky collage too!

So here is my layered paper flower. I crumpled each piece of paper to give it a 3D effect, and then punched a 1/16" hole (or you could use a pushpin) to put a mini brad through to hold it all together. I decided to use it on a greeting card, so I ran a blank 5.5" x 8.5" piece cardstock through my printer and printed "Just Wanted to Say Hi..." on it. I then sewed a couple of wavy lines below the text and adhered the flower with glue dots. The whole card took me about 15-20 minutes start to finish. Thanks for the inspiration Kayla!
I don't have a circle cutter, so I made a template for cutting out circles on my computer, printed it and cut them out. I then traced the template pieces on different sheets of paper and cut them out. Feel free to click to enlarge, save and print your own!If you make your own, I'd love to see it! Email me a picture or a link to your blog with the picture and I'd love to link it or show it on my blog. Any other ideas out there with what to do with paper rounds or layered paper flowers?

Have a great day :)

DIY Fabric
Tuesday, February 23, 2010 By Unknown 0 Comments
Happy Tuesday! :) My mother-in-law's birthday is today (Happy Birthday Katie!) and I wanted to send her a fun and unique card. So I thought about making a ribbon card, but decided I wanted to somehow incorporate a few bright and beautiful fabrics that she loves. I had heard of fabric postcards being done before, so I surfed around a bunch of different sites about fabric postcards. I found many different ways to do it, as well as different specifications and such that is required by the USPS. I put a bunch of different suggestions and thoughts together and came up with this way to make a fabric postcard. Yay!

Regulations and tips with sending a fabric postcard via USPS (found on a bunch of different sites):
+ Postcard must be 4" x 6" and no thicker than 1/8" *EDITED: Postcards can also be 5" x 7" - which means more room to write :) Thanks Elisa!!
+ It is probably a good idea to pay a little extra to have your postcard hand-canceled instead of risking it getting stuck in the machine that cancels them
+ A regular stamp will stick just fine in the corner, no glue or extra adhesive necessary
+ Put "POSTCARD" on the back at the top, to clarify, I guess :)
+ You can place the postcard in a clear envelope if you have embellishments that may fall off during transit (I have not tried this)

Supplies:
+ 2 pieces of heavyweight fusible interfacing - each 4" x 6"
+ 1 piece of white cotton fabric (I used heavy cotton quilting fabric) - 4.25" x 6.25" - I made the front and back pieces a little bigger to be able to trim down rough edges once the postcard was near finished
+ Fabric for the front of your postcard - I made a patchwork front! 4.25" x 6.25"

+ Iron-on transfer paper with your postcard back (message) printed onto it
- When making the back of the postcard on your computer document, be sure to make your document size 4"x6" and also be sure to set up your message on the left side and the address on the right side. I also put my return address in the upper left corner and put "POSTCARD" across the top.
- I left about 1/4" around the edges of the postcard back to be able to sew around the postcard at the end
- Make sure you print it mirror image so it will transfer correctly!
+ Or you can use a fabric pen to write your message
(I wrote on one of my other postcards - see the pink patchwork postcard below)
+ Rotary cutter & mat or scissors
+ Ruler
+ 2 sewing pins

+ Sewing machine & thread
Following the directions included in the iron-on sheets package, iron the postcard back transfer onto the white piece of fabric. Be sure that it is positioned correctly and that text is not falling off the edge (I almost did that, oops). Probably also a good idea to trim around your text area (I didn't do that so I could reuse the rest of the sheet later on), so you don't iron on extra transfer material stuff (which I did, oops).
It will now look something like this:
Next, iron one sheet of the heavyweight fusible interfacing to the back of the postcard front.
It will look something like this:
Now, iron on the other piece of heavyweight fusible interfacing to the back of the postcard back. I used a scrap piece of material to cover it while ironing to be sure I wouldn't mess up the transfer I had just ironed on.
The back of the postcard is under the polka dot fabric. :)
If you also printed out a message to go on the front, go ahead and stitch that to the front (you can also do this before ironing the interfacing on).Now you have two pieces like this:
Pin the two pieces together with right sides facing out.
Trim off excess.
Now you're almost finished! Stitch around the edges to finish. You can use a zigzag stitch or a decorative stitch. I used a straight stitch and went around the postcard 3 times to add a decorative feel.
Voil! A fabric postcard!
What a fun way to send snail mail! :)

Ok all you fabulous fabric gurus out there-- what is the name of this fabric? I have absolutely no idea and I need to order some for a project! I received a random assortment of fabrics from an order I placed on etsy several months ago, and thus, don't know the name of it. I've tried looking for it on etsy but with no luck (I searched "pink fabric" and it came up with 790 pages. I got to about page 15.)-- so, if you are the first to respond in the comments section of this post with the correct answer, I'll send you a cute little fabric scrap pack - about 10 random pieces from my stash. Thanks!
*EDITED:
Messy Karen said...it's Joel Dewberry for Westminster. it comes in other colors and i love it! Thank you Karen!! Please email me your shipping info and I will send you a fun fabric stash - thecreativeplace@gmail.com :)
+ Julia- I use an EK Success Paper Shaper 1.5" Circle punch - I have been very happy with all of my EK Success punches! :) Thank you for your kind words! :)

I've been punching a ton of these fun paper rounds lately. It's nice to be able to use up those little I-don't-know-what-to-do-with-these-paper-scraps in my scrap bin instead of just chucking them into the recycle basket. It's also quite therapeutic to watch t.v. in the evenings and punch rounds out- relaxing, yet being productive :)
So what can you do with these paper rounds? Make a garland, decorate a card, a scrapbook layout, add to mini albums as embellishments or tiny journaling spaces, or include a few in outgoing orders to your customers. I always include several of these to my customers :) Any other ideas or projects you can use (or have used) these rounds for?

Be on the lookout either tomorrow or early next week for another fabulous giveaway.
Have a great day!

My mouth is watering just thinking about these cute little cheese puffs. These are a great appetizer or party snack, but could also be used as bread for a meal. Yum!

Asiago Cheese Puffs
1 cup Asiago cheese, grated
1 tsp. minced fresh garlic
1/3 mayonnaise
1 tsp. dried oregano
1 tsp. dried thyme
1 tsp. dried parsley
1 pinch salt
1 pinch ground black pepper
1 French baguette, thinly sliced

Preheat oven to broil. In a mixing bowl, combine the Asiago cheese, garlic, mayonnaise, oregano, thyme, parsley, salt and pepper. If the mixture does not hold together well, add more mayonnaise, a little at a time.

On a baking sheet, arrange the baguette slices in a single layer. Spread the Asiago mixture on the slices. Broil for 3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and lightly browned. Serve immediately.

I found this great tutorial awhile back over at Design*Sponge for making Vintage Sheet File Folders. I was a little skeptical at first about using spray adhesive (I used spray adhesive all throughout undergrad for art projects- it was a love/hate relationship). I was worried the sheets would get all wrinkly while trying to glue them to the file folders, but I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was!

What a cute and inexpensive way to dress up boring file folders! All you need is a fat quarter of fabric (any fabric will do, it doesn't have to be a vintage sheet!) and a folder, spray adhesive, a credit card (to smooth the wrinkles out) and scissors or a rotary cutter and mat.

An Alphabet Find

Thursday, February 11, 2010 By Unknown 0 Comments
I was out and about yesterday and found these fun little abc cards - aren't they adorable? I am always on the lookout for anything alphabet, as my son is learning his abc's. These will definitely be going into paper packs soon, and if you'd like a whole set, you can grab it here. These would be great on a scrapbooking page, or in a mini album about going to school, or as a wall hanging or a collage. Maybe even make a mini album of the abc's as a learning tool for your toddler! :)

DIY :: Button and String Mini Journal

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 By Unknown 0 Comments
I've been trying to decide on what to make my hubby for a Valentine's gift and decided that I wanted to write more than a letter - so I decided to make him a mini journal / album / book of things I love about him, different memories I have of our life together, things like that (hopefully he won't read this before next weekend ;)). I found this fab tutorial awhile back about button and string closure and somehow wanted to incorporate it, thus I came up with this fun journal - it has a vintage feel - the button and string closure, and a bunch of found papers inside, including old school writing pages, graph paper and strategically cut magazine pages. The fun thing about these journals is you can use them for any occasion- to record a special event, to keep as a personal journal, to write a note to a friend, many possibilities!

First, gather your supplies:
- Cover paper - cut to 11" x 6"
- Inside pages (however many you prefer- I used 7 sheets) cut to 4.25" x 8"
- 2 eyelets (1/8")
- 11" of baker's twine or string
- 2 paper round die cuts - 1" each
- Eyelet punch (1/8"), eyelet setter, hammer and pad
- Stapler and staples
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Paper scorer (if you don't have one you can use a dull object - like a bone folder edge, a pen with the top still on, a butter knife- pressing lightly so as not to rip the paper)

Take your cover sheet and score a line 1.5" in from the right side (see below).

Then score a line 4.75" in from the left side (see below).

Fold your inside pages in half. Now your book cover and pages should look like this:Next, center one of the paper round die cuts on the outside flap (not sure how to explain that, lol- see picture below). Using your eyelet punch and hammer, punch through the die cut and cover sheet at the same time (hole punched should be in the middle of the die cut). Set one of the eyelets through this hole.
Now, fold your cover closed and line up the other paper round die cut about 1" from the other die cut you just set. I made pencil marks as a guide on where to place it once I lined it up.
Using the tutorial over at Erinzam, tie your string or twine around the eyelet (AFTER punching the 1/8" hole in the die cut paper round and putting it on the eyelet), set this eyelet and paper round punch where you just made your pencil marks as a guide.
Now it should look something like this. Trim off the extra string after setting the eyelet. *EDITED* Ok. So somehow my string ended up on TOP of the paper round die cut. I think I just got so excited about making it that I got carried away and forgot to put it UNDER the die cut before setting it. Haha :) So don't make that mistake ;)
Ok, now you need to attach the inside pages. I don't have a super huge stapler punch thing, so I had to get creative. So here's a picture to make you giggle: I stapled the pages to the cover by stapling them to my bulletin board, pulling the book off gently and then folding the staple prongs down carefully inside. If you choose to have a bunch of pages and it's getting all wonky when you try and staple it, you could try hand sewing it with a needle and embroidery thread.
Voila! A string and button mini journal! Now you can decorate and embellish the cover (or leave it blank with a simple title).... add pictures, journaling, mementos. :)I changed my header up top... still trying to decide if it's too "busy".... what do you think? Any thoughts or suggestions? *EDITED* Thank you for the suggestions! I changed it again so that the title was more legible... still trying to decide. Maybe it will grow on me. :)
